Galaxy Z Fold7: Consumer Reports Finds Better Durability, $1,999.99 MSRP

BGR’s latest foldable-phone roundup puts Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 near the front of the pack, drawing on Consumer Reports testing that found the handset strong in display readability, water resistance and tumble durability. The case for the Fold7 is straightforward: Samsung has made its book-style foldable much less awkward to carry without shrinking the big-screen experience.
Samsung lists the Fold7 at 4.2mm when unfolded, 8.9mm when closed, and 215g. Its 8-inch inner display runs at up to 120Hz, while the outer screen is a more usable 6.5-inch panel. The rear camera system includes a 200MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto.

Per Consumer Reports’ product review, the Fold7 passed its rated water-intrusion test and a five-minute rain test. It also remained functional after 50 and then 100 tumbler drops, although testers noted edge bumps and dulling. Scratch resistance was rated only fair.
That is useful context for anyone still treating foldables as inherently too fragile for daily use. It does not make the Fold7 rugged; the large folding screen still needs more care than a conventional slab phone. But the test results suggest its hinge, body and display assembly can cope with ordinary mishaps better than the category’s early reputation would imply.
Consumer Reports also rated display readability as excellent. Battery life, however, was merely average at 31.5 hours in its testing.

The compromises have not disappeared

BGR correctly flags the Fold7’s two obvious trade-offs. Samsung removed S Pen support, sacrificing a productivity feature that had helped distinguish previous Fold models. And wired charging remains limited to 25W despite the phone’s 4,400mAh battery. Samsung says a compatible 25W adapter can bring the battery to roughly 50% in 30 minutes, but that is conservative at this price point.
The more important correction is price. Samsung’s US MSRP for the unlocked 256GB Galaxy Z Fold7 is $1,999.99, not the $1,364.99 figure cited in BGR’s roundup. That lower number is a promotional or trade-in-dependent price, not the device’s standard starting price.

Windows angle

For Windows users, a Samsung foldable remains one of the better Android companions to a PC. Microsoft says Phone Link and Link to Windows support notifications, messages, calls, photos and, on supported Samsung hardware, app access and file drag-and-drop. The Fold7’s larger display may make it more practical to work independently of the PC, but it does not change the Windows integration story.
Prospective buyers should treat the Fold7 as a premium productivity phone with improved durability, not as a bargain or an S Pen replacement.
