I have 2 win7 PC's and need to network them for file sharing. I did have them networked through my router with everything working great. I am now without broadband and attempted to network them using a gigabit switch, both of them now see a public network but not each other directly.

Question is how do I get them to recognize each other in this configuration or would it be easier to use a crossover cable directly from each pc's lan port?

Thanks.

Solution
have you tried using them with the old router? even without broadband the box works as a switch. Also have they moved onto a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range on the ethernet cards properties when using the current switch?

Yes a crossover cable will perform the task just as good as a switch, although only for 2 PC's
