You can repair corrupted and damaged Excel file, then you should try to open and repair function in MS Excel first. It is built-in repair function that help to fix corrupt .xls/.xlsx files and open. As it is a built-in feature, it has a drawback. It might not work then some corruption issues are there. Hi @johnmicheal FYI You won't be able to attach links until you have made a few more messages. Don't get discouraged. You will be able to attach links soon!
There are several reasons for MS Excel file to get damaged such as virus attack, system malfunction, hard drive bad sector, shutting down file without closing your worksheet, software issues and so on. Most proper way of saving your file from corruption is to create proper back-up of your file but if you lack appropriate back-up then you can make use of Excel File Repair Tool.

Well, it is estimated that the error is occurring due to the corruption so, try repairing the corruption with the help of the inbuilt Open and Repair utility. Read this: 13 Inexpensive Ways to Fix Corrupt Excel File Assuredly
However if this won’t help you then the problem might be caused due to antivirus running on your system. Even in some cases it is found that some of extra Excel file is replaced or modified the header of the document. The Extra text is sometimes added between the “Content Type” and “Content Location” sections of the file header, making it unrecognizable, thus unable to read while opening it with Microsoft Excel.
So, try disabling the antivirus software, also try to clear IE's cache and reboot your computer
