I have a new Toshiba Satellite Laptop, AMD64, duo core Turion, with 3GB Ram. My intentions were to edit out unwanted icons, etc., from Welcome Center of Vista Home Premium. I made a backup copy of oobe.xml, naming it cyoobe.xml. The backup file did appear on the directory list of files. I had to exit DOS & return later. Then both oobe.xml and its backup, cyoobe.xml had disappeared.

Does any know what may have happened and how to retrieve these files? Also, will vista run ok without oobe.xml?

Thanks,

Solution
Vista will run Ok, with or without the file.
You should have the default (original) in your C:\Windows\System32\oobe\Info\default\ "YOUR LANGUAGE" Hopefully you made a backup?

Solution
The backup I made, cyoobe.xml, disappeared along with the oobe.xml. I wasn't aware of the info\default\english file. I'll look & see.
