I have just created an image backup for my windows8.1 computer, but when I try to open the image file I am told the Disk Image is not initialized, contains partitions that are not recognized or contains volumes that have not been assigned drive letters and I should use Disk Management snap-in to make sure everything is in a usable state.
I was able to go to Disk Management but there is no "snap-in".

Solution
I suspect that perhaps your image contains a .vhd or maybe a .vhdx
In either case I think you're talking about the "attach vhd" function from the "action" menu in Disk Management.
