Since it seems that Win7 can 'forget' a system image backup, is there any software that can directly use the files generated by Win7's system image app?
(acronis and others can transform a sys image to their type but any direct use software?)

Cause:
If you perform a restore point earlier than a system image backup, Win7 recovery will NOT see that backup - MS must keep a track of backups somewhere other than in the many many files it produces for a backup!

I make sure to use restore points as a safety, first and foremost, then the system image backup as a backup to the restore points, restore points are cheap and quick, system images are slow and HUGE!!, and apparently unreliable to boot!!

PS: IE-9 RC install screwed up things, did a restore pt recovery and things still are screwy!! Be careful!!

Solution
When dealing with system image backups created by Windows 7, it's essential to have a robust method for restoring these backups to ensure data safety and system recovery. Here are a few options you can explore to directly use the system image files generated by Windows 7's built-in backup tool without the need for conversion:

1. Macrium Reflect:

  • Description: Macrium Reflect is a popular backup software that offers comprehensive features, including the ability to work with Windows system image backups. It can directly mount and access Windows Image (WIM) files.
  • Functionality: You can use Macrium Reflect to browse and extract files from Windows 7 system image backups without the need for conversion...
