I've been using windows 7 for a few weeks and have been able to share files with the other computers on the network. This morning I tried to move a file from one of my computers to my windows 7 computer and got this error.

You need permission to perform this action.
I am the only user on this computer and have administrator rights. All the computers have the same user name and password. Disabling user control access did not help. I was able to go on the other computer and move the file I wanted to this computer. What happened.

Solution
It seems like you are encountering a file permission issue when trying to move a file from another computer to your Windows 7 machine. This error typically occurs when the permissions on the file or folder you are trying to access do not allow you to perform the desired action. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Check File and Folder Permissions:

  1. Check File Permissions: Verify the permissions of the file you are trying to move. Right-click on the file, select "Properties," and navigate to the "Security" tab to check if your user account has the necessary permissions.
  2. Check Folder Permissions: Similarly, check the permissions of the folder where you are trying...

  2. Check Folder Permissions: Similarly, check the permissions of the folder where you are trying to move the file. Make sure your account has the required permissions to write to that folder.

    Take Ownership of the File:

  3. Take Ownership: You can try taking ownership of the file if you are facing permission issues. Right-click the file, select "Properties," go to the "Security" tab, click on "Advanced," and then click on the "Owner" tab to change the owner to your account.

    Temporarily Disable UAC:

  4. User Account Control (UAC): Temporarily disable UAC to see if it resolves the issue. You can do this by going to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change User Account Control settings and setting it to the lowest level.

    Network Sharing Settings:

  5. Network Sharing: Check if network sharing settings are configured correctly on both your Windows 7 machine and the computer you are trying to move the file from. Ensure that file sharing is enabled and the appropriate permissions are set.

    Additional Steps:

    • Ensure that both computers are part of the same workgroup or homegroup.
    • Restart both computers and try the file transfer again.
    • Update Windows 7 with the latest updates and security patches.
If the issue persists after trying these steps, please provide more details about the file, the locations involved, and any specific error messages you encounter for further assistance.
