Here’s a quick summary of the information from the TechRadar article:
ActiveX Blocked by Default in Microsoft 365 (Starting April 2025):
- Microsoft is disabling ActiveX by default in Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio).
- Reason: ActiveX posed major security risks, such as enabling attackers to execute remote code if exploited.
- Impact:
- You can no longer create or interact with ActiveX objects by default in Microsoft 365 files.
- Existing ActiveX objects will appear as static images, but users can’t interact with them.
- Enabling ActiveX now requires manual changes via the Trust Center, and only admins may have this option (users may see it greyed out).
- This applies to all users as of April 2025 (affecting Beta and Current Channel (Preview) users since Version 2504/Build 18730.20030).
- There is currently no direct replacement for ActiveX in Microsoft 365.
- Feedback about this change can be given using the built-in File > Feedback tool in any 365 app.
If you need information about how to adapt to this change, migrate away from ActiveX, or specific details for IT administrators, let me know!
