Microsoft's Clipchamp has introduced a groundbreaking feature that allows users to edit videos by modifying the transcript, streamlining the editing process for content creators. This innovative approach enables users to delete portions of the transcript, automatically removing the corresponding sections from the video, eliminating the need to navigate complex timelines.
The transcript-based editing feature utilizes artificial intelligence to transcribe spoken dialogue within a video. Once the transcript is generated, users can highlight and delete any unwanted lines of text, prompting Clipchamp to cut the corresponding sections from the video. This functionality is particularly beneficial for editing long-form content such as webinars, podcasts, or meeting recordings, where traditional timeline-based editing can be cumbersome.
For instance, if there's an awkward silence during a team call or a prolonged Q&A session, users can simply select and delete that portion in the transcript, and Clipchamp will seamlessly remove it from the video. This method is effective for eliminating off-topic conversations in meeting recordings, filler words or stumbles in podcast episodes, and lengthy explanations in presentations.
The new workflow is accessible under the "Transcript" tab in the editor, replacing the previous "Captions" tab. Users can still generate and edit closed captions by selecting "Transcribe media" from the menu above the video stage. According to Microsoft's announcement, the transcript-based editing tool is rolling out to Clipchamp for work users starting June 2025, with personal users expected to gain access soon thereafter.
This update marks a significant advancement in video editing, offering a more intuitive and efficient method for content creators to refine their videos without the complexities of traditional timeline navigation.
