Analytics Insight has published a roundup of free AI learning options from Google, IBM, Microsoft, AWS, NVIDIA, Meta and DeepLearning.AI, but Windows users and IT admins should read the “free certification” label carefully. Free training, a completion certificate, a digital badge and a vendor certification exam are different products, often with different eligibility and pricing.
That distinction matters most for Microsoft’s offerings. Microsoft Learn has extensive no-cost AI and Copilot training, including material for Microsoft 365 administrators, business users, Azure developers and Copilot Studio builders. But the company’s January 20 to March 2, 2026 Credentials AI Challenge has already ended. It offered three free Applied Skills assessments, while discounts on related certification exams were awarded through a sweepstakes rather than issued automatically.
Microsoft describes Applied Skills as scenario-based micro-credentials earned through interactive, lab-based assessments. They are narrower than role-based Microsoft Certifications, which typically require a proctored, paid exam. That makes an Applied Skills credential useful evidence of a specific task, such as creating an agent in Copilot Studio, but it is not interchangeable with an Azure or Microsoft 365 certification.
IBM’s SkillsBuild is a clearer fit for beginners seeking a no-cost, shareable credential. Its AI Literacy, AI Fundamentals and Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals courses award digital credentials after completion. The material covers AI concepts, ethics, machine learning, language and vision, with some courses including a Watson Studio introduction.
AWS has also expanded its free credential options. In April, AWS said its hands-on microcredentials became free through AWS Skill Builder. Its AWS Agentic AI Demonstrated assessment covers practical work with Amazon Bedrock-based agents, and AWS now offers free Cloud Practitioner and AI Practitioner SimuLearn plans that issue verifiable badges after learners complete the assigned work.
The practical rule is simple:
Anyone building a résumé should list the exact credential name and issuer rather than describing a completion badge as a vendor certification.

Free learning is not always free certification

Google’s AI Essentials course promises a shareable completion certificate and is aimed at general workplace use of generative AI, prompting and productivity. It is not the same thing as a Google Cloud certification. Similarly, DeepLearning.AI says its short courses are free, but its own support documentation says those short courses do not provide official certificates; subscribers may receive a platform “Accomplishment” instead. The practical rule is simple:
- Free course: access to videos, readings or labs may cost nothing.
- Certificate or badge: usually proves course completion or a narrowly tested skill.
- Professional certification: generally validates a broader role or product area through a formal exam and may carry a fee.
- Promotional voucher: may be time-limited, region-limited, competitive or tied to a specific event.
Anyone building a résumé should list the exact credential name and issuer rather than describing a completion badge as a vendor certification.
