Microsoft has announced a significant shift in its support strategy for Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 applications, aiming to transition users to Windows 11. Starting August 2026, Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will no longer receive new feature updates. This change affects all users, including those on the Current Channel, Monthly Enterprise Channel, and Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, with final feature updates scheduled for August 2026, October 13, 2026, and January 12, 2027, respectively.
Despite the cessation of feature updates, Microsoft will continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028. This extension aims to maintain security while users transition to Windows 11. However, Microsoft emphasizes that using Microsoft 365 apps on an unsupported operating system like Windows 10 can lead to performance and reliability issues.
Windows 10 itself is set to reach its end of support on October 14, 2025. After this date, the operating system will no longer receive technical assistance, feature updates, or security updates. To assist users during the transition, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. For individual users, this includes a one-year extension of security updates at no additional cost if they use Windows Backup to sync settings to the cloud. Alternatively, users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or pay $30 USD for the extension. For commercial organizations, the ESU program offers annual subscriptions, with pricing starting at $61 USD per device for the first year and increasing each subsequent year.
This strategic move underscores Microsoft's commitment to advancing its user base to Windows 11, which offers enhanced security features and improved performance. Users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 to continue receiving the latest features and support for Microsoft 365 applications.
