Microsoft is actively developing a feature for Windows 11 known as "Cross Device Resume," designed to enable users to seamlessly continue their activities from a smartphone to a PC with a single click. This functionality mirrors Apple's macOS "Handoff," which allows users to start a task on one Apple device and pick it up on another without interruption.
During a Microsoft Build 2025 session, a demonstration showcased this feature in action. In the demo, a user transferred a Spotify session from a mobile device to a Windows 11 PC instantaneously. The process involved a discreet icon appearing atop the app icon in the taskbar, facilitating a seamless transition between devices. Aakash Varshney, Senior Product Manager for Cross-Device and Interaction at Microsoft, explained:
"When you open an app on a mobile device or tablet, Windows can display a discreet icon right on top of your app icon in the taskbar. This creates a 'seamless' Windows device experience for your app. It’s a visual element that launches your app directly into a task with a tap, providing a seamless, intuitive switch from PC to phone."
In the demonstration, hovering over the taskbar icon revealed a tooltip stating, "Restore. Recently opened on a mobile device." Activating this function launched Spotify on the PC, resuming playback from the exact point it was left off on the mobile device. The interface displayed a list of programs initiated in this manner, with the current session highlighted.
It's noteworthy that Microsoft has been exploring similar cross-device functionalities for several years, previously under the project name "Project Rome." While the recent demo was later edited to remove this segment, indicating that the feature is still under development, it underscores Microsoft's commitment to enhancing cross-device integration. The removal of the demo segment suggests that the feature may not be ready for immediate release, but it is a clear indication that work is ongoing.
This development aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to create a more interconnected ecosystem, allowing users to transition effortlessly between devices. By implementing features like Cross Device Resume, Windows 11 aims to provide a more cohesive and user-friendly experience, bridging the gap between mobile and desktop environments.
As this feature is still in development, users can anticipate future updates from Microsoft regarding its availability and functionality. The successful implementation of Cross Device Resume could significantly enhance productivity and convenience for users who frequently switch between their smartphones and PCs.
