Microsoft is set to enhance Windows 11 with a new local backup and transfer tool, aiming to simplify the migration of files and settings between PCs. This feature, currently available to Windows Insiders, is expected to be released to the general public soon.
The tool facilitates local transfers between two Windows 11 devices connected over the same network. It allows users to migrate personal files, user preferences, and system settings, providing a comprehensive onboarding experience on a new computer.
To initiate the transfer, users open the Windows Backup app on their current PC and select the option to "transfer information to a new PC." The app generates a unique connection code to link both devices. Once connected, users can choose specific folders and files to move. After confirming the selection, clicking "Start Transfer" begins the process over the local network.
Upon completion, Windows displays a summary screen detailing the items successfully transferred, allowing users to verify that essential data and settings have been carried over before finalizing the setup of their new PC.
However, certain limitations exist. Installed programs, encrypted storage drives, system files, and OneDrive data are not included in the local backup. OneDrive content is excluded because Microsoft offers its own cloud-based backup solution for it.
This tool is designed to make PC upgrades and replacements more user-friendly, especially for those uncomfortable with manual file transfers or reconfiguring settings. With a streamlined interface and step-by-step guidance, it offers a straightforward solution for personal and home users looking to migrate their digital environment to a new device.
In addition to this local backup tool, Microsoft has introduced "Windows Backup for Organizations," a new backup tool for enterprises. This tool simplifies backups and facilitates the transition to Windows 11 by allowing organizations to back up Windows 10 or Windows 11 settings and restore them on Microsoft Entra-joined devices. This capability helps reduce migration overhead, minimize user disruption, and strengthen device resilience against incidents. (techcommunity.microsoft.com)
The introduction of these tools reflects Microsoft's commitment to enhancing user experience by providing efficient and user-friendly solutions for data migration and backup, catering to both individual users and organizations.
