When I receive a new e-mail in any folder (inbox, spam) I don't get the new e-mail envelope icon in the task bar and I don't know how to get it back. I used to get it before and now nothing. I already went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons and set it to show icons and notifications. I still get the icon in the notification area but not on the large application icon where I used to get the envelope icon. I have tried re-installing Windows Live Mail but nothing. Did something in the registry get deleted if so how do I get it back? This problem seem to start after I downloaded and ran Spybot Search & Destroy.

Any suggestions...

Thanks

It seems like the behavior of the envelope icon in the taskbar for new emails in Windows Live Mail has changed after running Spybot Search & Destroy. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check the Taskbar Settings:
    • Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar.
    • Go to "Toolbars" and ensure that "Windows Live Mail" is checked. If it's not there, you can add it back by selecting it from the list.
[]Reset the Taskbar Icon Cache: Windows maintains an icon cache that can sometimes become corrupted. You can reset this cache to see if it resolves the issue.
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

]Check Windows Live Mail Settings: Ensure that the notification settings within Windows Live Mail are correctly configured to show the envelope icon in the taskbar for new emails. You can check this within the application settings. []Registry Check: While modifying the registry should be done cautiously, you can check if the necessary registry keys are still intact. Here's how:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
    • Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
    • Check if there's a specific setting related to the taskbar icon. If not, it might indicate a deeper issue.
    [
]System Restore: If the issue started after running Spybot Search & Destroy, you might consider using System Restore to revert your system to a point before you ran the program.
  2. Reinstall Windows Live Mail Completely: Uninstall Windows Live Mail, restart your computer, and then download and install the latest version directly from Microsoft's website.

    Additional Tips:

    • Ensure that your Windows Live Mail is up to date with the latest patches and updates.
    • Consider using alternative email clients if the issue persists, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with the missing envelope icon in the taskbar for new emails. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any specific errors during these steps.
