Windows 7 New Computer getting file system check

Approximately three weeks ago I purchased a new hp laptop that came with Windows 7 installed. This morning when I turned it on and stepped out of the room I was greeted by the following message:

checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.

Eventually it went through the 3 stages and checked my disks, but I'm unsure as to why a brand new laptop and OS would need to be running something like this so early in the game. The computer was not shut off improperly, and I cannot think of any other reason why this would need to run.

Help please?

I am experiencing the same exact problem. Thinking of taking the laptop back to Costco, but I just loaded all of my files and it going to be such a hassle to do it all over again!!!
