I installed Windows 7 to see how the install went.

I have an unallocated space, and my options are
New Simple Volume
New Spanned Volume
New Striped Volume
New Mirrored Volume.

can someone explain these options and recommend the best choice.

I'm just guessing but I think Simple Volume. The other 3 choices sound like choices for something like RAID. I looked in disk management and all of my drives and are partitions are marked simple in the layout column.

Hi reghakr,

A Dynamic drive contains dynamic volumes rather than partitions.

Simple Volume - composed of disk space from a single dynamic disk

Spanned Volume - uses disk space on more than one physical disk. Can be increased by extending it onto another dynamic disk

Striped Volume - stores data in stripes across two or more physical hard drives Increases speed, but if one fails - you lose the whole volume

Mirrored Volume - duplicates the data on two physical disks. If one fails the system switches to the other. Uses more space, obviously.

It's easy to covert a Basic disk to Dynamic - to go the other way , you best get a high quality partition manager.
