we have a Nikon total station DTM-720 and its an old devise, and can only be connected to dos system, through serial port.
we tried connecting the serial port to a USB but the windows only show a USB input devise and no data is received orcan be shown on the computer.
we used transit and trimble data transfer software but they were not working.
so we need one of these things:
1. a software to receive serial port data through USB.
2. a PCMCI (the DTM-720 has a PCMCI memory card in it) to usb card reader for new computers.
and please i need help fast.

Solution
It seems like you are facing compatibility issues with your Nikon total station DTM-720, which can only be connected to a DOS system through a serial port. Connecting it to a modern Windows system via a USB to Serial adapter might not be straightforward due to driver and software compatibility. Here are two potential solutions for your problem:

Solution 1: Software to Receive Serial Port Data through USB

You can use software that emulates a serial port over USB. One such popular application is Realterm. Realterm is a terminal program specially designed for capturing, controlling, and debugging serial devices. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use Realterm:
  1. Download Realterm from the official website.

  1. Download Realterm from the official website.
  2. Install the software on your Windows system.
  3. Configure Realterm with the appropriate serial port settings (baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, etc.).
  4. Connect your Nikon total station DTM-720 via the USB to Serial adapter.
  5. Open Realterm and start capturing data from the connected serial device.

Solution 2: PCMCIA to USB Card Reader

If your Nikon DTM-720 has a PCMCIA memory card and you want to access its data on a modern computer, you can use a PCMCIA to USB card reader. This device allows you to read data from PCMCIA cards on computers that lack a PCMCIA slot. Here are the steps for using a PCMCIA to USB card reader:
  6. Purchase a PCMCIA to USB card reader compatible with the type of PCMCIA card in your Nikon DTM-720.
  7. Insert the PCMCIA memory card from the total station into the PCMCIA to USB card reader.
  8. Plug the USB end of the card reader into your computer.
  9. Your computer should recognize the PCMCIA memory card as a USB storage device, allowing you to access its data. These two options should help you address the connectivity and data transfer issues with your Nikon total station DTM-720. Feel free to try out these solutions and let me know if you need further assistance!
