my keyboard icon shows NL is off. What is the purpose of this setting and should it be turned on for basic pc use?

Solution
The "NL" indicator on your keyboard typically stands for "Num Lock." Here's some information about Num Lock and its functionality:

Num Lock (NL) Functionality:

  • Numeric Keypad: Num Lock controls the functionality of the numeric keypad on your keyboard. When Num Lock is on, the numeric keypad functions numerically (0-9), like a calculator.
  • Navigation Controls: When Num Lock is off, the keys on the numeric keypad often have other secondary functions like navigation keys (Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, etc.).
  • Status Indicator: The NL indicator shows whether Num Lock is currently active or not.

Basic PC Use:

  • Default Setting: For basic PC use where you primarily use the alphanumeric keys, you might not need to activate Num Lock.
  • Calculator Functions: If you regularly input numerical data or use the numeric keypad for calculations, turning Num Lock on could be helpful.
  • Typing Numerical Values: Ensures that the numeric keypad is set up for entering numerical values rather than navigation commands.

Recommendation:

  • Personal Preference: Whether you need Num Lock on or off depends on how you use your keyboard. If you prefer to use the numeric keypad for navigation shortcuts over numerical input, you can keep Num Lock off. If you often input numerical values using the numeric keypad, turning Num Lock on would be beneficial. It's mainly a personal preference based on your typing patterns and whether you use your keyboard for numerical input or navigation functions. Feel free to experiment with it to see what works best for your daily PC use.
