For all the publicity and warning Family Radio’s Harold Camping and his small group of followers gave us beforehand, now that their predicted doomsday has come without the return of Jesus Christ, they don’t have much to say.
The Religion News Service noted that the followers had refused to schedule media interviews after May 21, and it seems like even though the world didn’t end, they’re keeping to it, at least for now.
I haven’t seen a single interview with Camping or his followers, who thought they would be spending the rest of the day, after 6 p.m. local time, in heaven. He had told reporters that there was “no possibility” that the May 21, 2011 date would be wrong, as his previous prediction turned out to be.
People outside of that small group of rapture-ready Christians have offered their reactions about Camping’s failed prediction, mostly bad jokes. More mainstream Christian leaders have come forth with their impression of the ordeal and many times used it as a vehicle to talk about how Jesus will return soon… but how soon, we don’t know.
