Hi Sam,
try booting into the bios and changing the boot order so you will boot from disk. Then place the windows 7 disk in the drive and reboot. (remember to press any key when prompted), when you get to the install screen click on 'Repair' instead.
Any problems post back..

I got the same error except this time in problem signature 05:extendedmedia

could this mean my hard drive died? or a hardware problem of some sort?

Does this happen as soon as you boot up? Can you get into the bios at least?

This is worth a try. If you are able to boot into safe mode, do that and uninstall the last few updates which were installed since the error occurred. If this is succesful, make sure you do not have automatic updates turned on. At the same time, open Msconfig - startup tab, and untick anything there relating to third party software.

Sounds like your hard drive might have gone bad on you.

Try:

1.

try booting into the bios and changing the boot order so you will boot from disk. Then place the windows 7 disk in the drive and reboot. (remember to press any key when prompted), when you get to the install screen click on 'Repair' instead.

2.

boot your OS CD and run chkdsk from the Repair Console

As Kemical said, you need 7 dvd in your drive.
