Windows 7 Problem with sending video over network

I recently decided to put my videos onto a "decomissioned" computer. I put all the videos into the "public" folder on my computer but when I try to access the files on my other Windows XP computer, windows media player shows up and runs it as a music file with No video. Is there a fix to this problem?

most likely solution would be to get a codec package to update it OR use one with built in ones like the free and excellent VLC.
