When I intentionally disconnect a session on Windows 7 Enterprise, after about 5 minutes the disconnected session automatically logs out. This happens either by using the start->disconnect option or clicking the "x" on the toolbar at top. I would rather the session remain disconnected and any programs running continue to run (as the definition of disconnect says). I have checked GPEDIT.MSC and there are no timeouts. Any ideas?

Solution
If you are facing issues with disconnected sessions automatically logging out on Windows 7 Enterprise, despite no timeouts being set in GPEDIT.MSC, there could be a few other settings and configurations to check. Here are some suggestions to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Checking Remote Desktop Session Settings:

  1. Remote Desktop Configuration: Verify the settings for Remote Desktop Sessions. These can be accessed through Control Panel -> System -> Remote Settings -> Select the Remote tab.
  2. Group Policy Settings: Ensure that the Group Policy settings for Remote Desktop Services are properly configured. You can access these settings through gpedit.msc under Computer Configuration ->...

You can access these settings through gpedit.msc under Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> Remote Desktop Session Host -> Session Time Limits.

    Checking Power Settings:

  3. Power Plan Settings: Make sure that the power plan settings are not configured to log out users after a period of inactivity. Check the power settings through Control Panel -> Power Options.

    Checking Third-Party Software:

  4. Third-Party Applications: Some third-party applications or security software might interfere with the session disconnection behavior. Temporarily disable such software and test if the issue persists.

    Additional Troubleshooting Steps:

  5. Registry Settings: Check the registry settings related to Remote Desktop Services for any conflicting configurations.
  6. Session Timeout Policies: Review any group policies or scripts that might be enforcing session timeouts.
  7. Event Viewer: Check the Event Viewer for any related logs or error messages that could provide insight into the automatic logouts. By carefully reviewing these settings and configurations, you may be able to identify the cause of the automatic logout behavior for disconnected sessions on your Windows 7 Enterprise system.
