Dear Forum,

Please ignore this question:-

Hostsxpert has a make writeable option at the top!!

Shame on me.

Dear Forum

I have just installed windows 8 for the first time.

I have been using hostsxpert to amend the hosts file to control some of the rubbish that infiltrates from the internet. I install it but none of the options such as merge are working. I believe that windows 8 has some form of protection to prevent accessing the hosts file?

Can anyone help?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

Run HostsXpert as an Administrator: - Right-click on the HostsXpert application shortcut or executable file. - Select "Run as administrator" to elevate its permissions. 2. Disable UAC (User Account Control): - Temporarily disabling UAC can sometimes help in modifying system files. - To do this, go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change User Account Control settings and lower the settings to the minimum. 3. Manually Edit the Hosts File: - If HostsXpert is still having issues, you can manually edit the hosts file. - Locate the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. - Right-click on the hosts file and select "Properties." - Go to the Security tab and click on the "Edit" button. - Select your user account in the list and check the "Allow" box for "Full Control." - Save the changes and try editing the hosts file again. 4. Alternative Tools: - If HostsXpert continues to have issues, you can try alternative tools like Notepad++ to edit the hosts file or use command-line tools like PowerShell. By following these steps, you should be able to modify the hosts file on your Windows 8 system successfully. If you encounter any specific errors or need further assistance, feel free to ask! Best regards,
