The computer is a VAIO 6.2 running Windows 7 Home Premium. When the computer goes into sleep mode it is shutting down. We click the power button and the VAIO screen keeps cycling. In order to start Windows we click the F10 and get a message that Windows was not shut down properly so we have to do a restart. What do we need to do to fix the problem?

Hello Marsha,

Please confirm below points:
1. how long you are facing this problem.?
2.did you installed any software or updates ?
3.have you made any BIOS settings ?

Thx,
AB...!

Ab -- Thank you for responding. I was beginning to wonder if anyone would help.

The problem started about 3 weeks ago after transferring a video from a smart phone.
The only software installed after that was DropBox. I did not change any bios settings.

Regards,

Marsha

Hello Marsha,

Thanks for your reply... your problem seems to be with OS settings. I would suggest you to follow below steps and let me know if that works..!

Go to Start. In the search box type "Device Manager" (without the quotes) - and then press Enter; this will open up the Device Manager. Double click on 'Universal Serial Bus controllers.' Now you will see a list of 'USB Root Hub'. Right-click the top one of these and select 'Properties'. Click on the Power Management tab, un-tick where it says 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and click 'OK'. Now repeat this action on the other 'USB Root Hub' items in the list. when they are all done you can close the Device Manager, and your USB mouse and keyboard will now be able to re-awake your computer.

after doing this activity....when you will move your mouse or will press any key..the computer will be back up from sleep mode.

you can try this and if this not works, restore the changes...!

Method 1: Install the current software for your device and verify its configuration
First, download the latest version of the Microsoft IntelliType software, IntelliPoint software, or both for your keyboard, your mouse, or both. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK
After you install this software, run it, and then verify that the correct device is selected and that the settings are as you want them to be. If your keyboard does not have a dedicated Sleep key and you want to program Sleep for an alternative key, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Keyboard control panel.
  2. On the Key Settings tab, double-click the key that you want to change to access the Reassign a Key wizard.
  3. Select the Start a Program, Web page, or file option, and then click Next.
  4. To enable this key to start Sleep mode, run the following command:
    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
    Note
In this command, there are spaces before and after powrprof.dll.
