Hi all - did a lot of research on this and have seen similar threads but no real solution. I have a Dell dimension 5150 with a junky sigmatel onboard card, Since migrating from vista - im only getting sound through 2 speakers, have lost 5.1 surround. Strange thing is if i go and test the device through the sound control panel - the speakers all work as expected. Driving me nuts - im at the point of buying a new sound card - but im worried that they might not even be compatable with w7 either. I did hear that "if it works with Vista - it will work with Windows 7 " but that is definitely not the case. Have tried installing the driver in compatability mode for both vista and XP - no joy,.

Anybody with a possible solution?? ?

Many thanks

Vic

Check Sound Settings: - Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar and select "Playback devices." - Ensure that the correct speaker configuration (5.1 surround sound) is selected as the default playback device. 2. Update Drivers: - Visit Dell's official website and download the latest drivers for your integrated sound card compatible with Windows 7. - Install the drivers and reboot your computer. 3. Configure Audio Channels: - Open the sound control panel and make sure that the audio channels are correctly set up for 5.1 surround sound. - Test the settings to ensure all speakers are working. 4. Compatibility Mode: - Since you've already tried installing the driver in compatibility mode for both Vista and XP without success, consider other alternatives. 5. Consider External Sound Card: - If internal sound card compatibility remains an issue, you can explore using an external USB sound card that explicitly supports Windows 7 and 5.1 surround sound. 6. Check Hardware Compatibility: - Ensure that any new sound card you consider purchasing explicitly lists Windows 7 compatibility and support for 5.1 surround sound. 7. Community Support: - Check Dell community forums or Windows 7 forums for any specific solutions or workarounds related to your setup. 8. Professional Assistance: - If all else fails, seeking assistance from a professional or a local technician might be beneficial to diagnose and fix the issue. By following these steps, you should be able to tackle the sound configuration issues you are facing after migrating to Windows 7. If you encounter any specific error messages or need further assistance, feel free to provide more details for a more targeted solution.
