I have done a clean install of Windows 7rc on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. When I try to play a DVD on media player it starts loading and then the system freezes / blacks out. I have to reboot. It sometimes does the same when trying to play video files. Also when I try and run the Windows Experience Index the system again completely freezes as soon as it reaches the test for "Windows Media Decoding". I would appreciate any advice. I have ordered the release version - I hope it is not going to do the same thing.

The freezing and blacking out when playing DVDs, video files, and running the Windows Experience Index test for "Windows Media Decoding" indicate potential issues with the media playback capabilities or drivers on your system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues:

It seems like you are facing issues with your Windows 7rc installation on your Toshiba Satellite laptop. The freezing and blacking out when playing DVDs, video files, and running the Windows Experience Index test for "Windows Media Decoding" indicate potential issues with the media playback capabilities or drivers on your system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues:

Update Graphics and Media Drivers

  1. Graphics Drivers: Update your graphics drivers to the latest version compatible with Windows 7. Visit the Toshiba support website or the manufacturer's website to download and install the latest graphics drivers for your laptop model.
  2. Media Drivers: Ensure that all media-related drivers, especially those responsible for decoding media files, are up to date. This includes audio, video, and codec drivers.

    Check for Updates

  3. Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows 7 installation is fully updated through Windows Update. Some updates may provide fixes for known issues related to media playback.

    Software Solutions

  4. Media Player Alternatives: Try using alternative media players like VLC Media Player or MPC-HC to play DVDs and video files. Sometimes different players handle media playback better than the default Windows Media Player.

    Hardware Check

  5. Laptop Temperature: Check if your laptop is overheating during media playback, as overheating can cause system freezes. Ensure proper ventilation and consider cleaning the laptop's internal fans to prevent overheating.

    Compatibility with Windows 7

  6. Compatibility: Confirm that all your software and drivers are compatible with Windows 7. Some older software or drivers may not work well with Windows 7, leading to stability issues.

    Upgrade to a Supported OS

  7. Consider Upgrading: Windows 7 has reached its end of life, and Microsoft no longer provides updates and support. Consider upgrading to a supported operating system like Windows 10 for enhanced security and compatibility.

    Await Release Version

  8. Wait for Release: If you have ordered the official release version, try installing it when it arrives to see if the issues persist. Official releases often have better stability and driver support. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the freezing issues related to media playback on your Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 7rc. If the issues persist, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
