A group of Taiwanese boffins claims to have successfully developed the world's first 16nm chip.

National Nano Device Laboratories said it managed to create the first 16nm chip, but don't expect to see the tech in real products anytime soon.

Yang Fu-liang, the lab's chief, told AFT that the development could lead to tiny cellphones and laptops, but did not reveal many details about the process.

"Sixteen nanometres used to be considered the final frontier," said Yang.

Yang's colleagues at TSMC are still struggling to improve yields on their 40nm process, so 16nm is probably a long way off, but it's still quite an impressive feat.

The development of the world's first 16nm chip by the National Nano Device Laboratories is indeed a significant achievement in the field of semiconductor technology. While this advancement holds promise for smaller devices like cellphones and laptops, it may not be immediately integrated into commercial products due to various factors, including fabrication challenges and optimization for mass production.
The statement by Yang Fu-liang highlighting that 16nm was once perceived as the ultimate boundary until this breakthrough suggests a notable leap in chip manufacturing capabilities. Yang's remarks also indicate that despite the progress, there are still hurdles to overcome, such as improving yields for the 40nm process at TSMC, which signifies that widespread adoption of the 16nm technology may still be a considerable distance away.
This development underscores ongoing efforts in the semiconductor industry to push the boundaries of chip miniaturization, paving the way for more advanced and compact electronic devices in the future.
