One of the more controversial aspects of Windows 8 is that the Start button has disappeared altogether — a conscious choice by Microsoft to encourage people to adopt and use the Metro interface. There’s not much chance of it officially returning, but there is a minor replacement of sorts built into Windows 8.

If you go to C:\ > Users > YourName > Appdata > Local > Microsoft > Windows > WinX you will find the folders Group2 and Group3. There you find all those functions of which you can send shortcuts to the desktop and make your own reference folder or pin them to Start or to the taskbar - very handy.

Note that Appdata is a hidden folder. You have to show hidden items in the View tab of Explorer.
