I installed W7 Home Premium on my computer, because a lot of my games won't run on W7 I've decided to install said W7 on my wifes computer and go back to XP.My question is can I deactivate it or do I need to call MS for a new key? This is a retail upgrade copy.

If you have installed Windows 7 Home Premium on your wife's computer and now want to deactivate it to move back to Windows XP on your computer, you can generally deactivate Windows by uninstalling the product key. Here's guidance on how you can accomplish this:

Steps to Deactivate Windows 7 License Key:

  1. Uninstall the Product Key:
    • Press Windows Key + R to open the "Run" dialog.
    • Type in slui.exe 4 and press Enter. This will open the activation wizard.
    • Follow the prompts to uninstall the product key from the computer.
    []Revert to Windows XP:
    • Install Windows XP on your computer using the XP installation media.
    [
    ]Activate Windows XP:
    • You will need to activate Windows XP with the appropriate product key.

      Need for a New Key:

    • If you encounter any issues during the deactivation or reactivation process, you may need to contact Microsoft Support to explain your situation. Since you mentioned you are using a retail upgrade copy of Windows 7, Microsoft might provide assistance in assigning a new key or reactivating the old one on another system.

      Important Notes:

      • Ensure you have a valid Windows XP product key ready for activation.
      • Deactivating and reactivating operating systems can sometimes be a complex process, so it's advisable to reach out to Microsoft Support if you face any difficulties.
By following these steps, you should be able to deactivate your Windows 7 license key and move back to Windows XP without the need for a new key, but contacting Microsoft for support is always an option if needed.
