Windows 7 Thunderbird - downloading wrong

i'm trying to load Thunderbird on my upgraded Window7 computer. instead of downloading the exe for the application, it downloads a binary file, which does not load the program on my computer. it isn't in programs and none of the icons/shortcuts are on my computer. what am i doing wrong
