My 9yo installed a game program that didn't work, and when he tried to uninstall it, I think he said "yes" to something he shouldn't have. Now all my desktop items show Internet Explorer as their icons, and every one that I try to open tries to open with that. If I right-click and click on "open with...." something else, it changes every icon to that program's icon.

We've had this computer for less than a month, and I've not done any back-ups, so I can't even restore it to some former point. I would greatly appreciate any help that you can give me. Thanks!

What kind on computer is it? There should be a recovery partition for it if it's from a major maker like Dell or HP. When you get it straightened setup a limited user's account for each your kids.

Try the HP website. I think you just tap the F8 key while booting up and it will bring up a menu. If the PC is still under warranty maybe customer service can help.
