Windows 8 Upgrade from Win 7 Ultimate

I am thinking of upgrading my Win 7 Ultimate laptop to Win 8. What should I be aware of? My programs are compatible but will they be hidden or incorporated into tiles?

They will not be hidden but there will be tiles created on the Start screen for them. You can also install a utility such as Start8 that will give you back the Start button/menu.

Once I get it installed how do I get to 8.1?

8.1 is a free upgrade from Win 8. It is installed from the Windows Store.
