Good Day,

I did an upgrade on wife's laptop tonight, everything went smoothly, or seemingly so. But trying to connect to the internet, IE8 won't connect. I know there is a valid wireless connection because I am on it as I type on a desktop using that same wireless connection.

Here is the odd part...with Vista, Microsoft did several updates in the last few months where they forced IE8 onto her laptop, and every time IE8 was installed, I had to go back and do a system restore before that update back to IE7.

With the upgrade to Windows 7, that looks unlikely to do a system restore, LOL.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Solution
It seems like you're facing connectivity issues with Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) on your wife's laptop after upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. Let's troubleshoot this issue step by step:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Network Connection:
    • Ensure that the wireless connection is stable and working. Check if other devices can connect to the internet through the same network.
  2. Reset Internet Explorer Settings:
    • Sometimes, resetting Internet Explorer settings can fix connectivity issues. Here's how you can do it:
      • Open IE8.
      • Go to Tools (gear icon) -> Internet Options.
      • Go to the Advanced tab and click on the "Reset" button.
      • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset IE settings.

  3. Check Internet Explorer Settings:
    • Ensure that IE8 is configured to use the correct network settings. Check the proxy settings and ensure they are correct.
  4. Update Windows:
    • Make sure Windows 7 is up to date with all the latest updates. Sometimes, updates can include fixes for connectivity issues.
  5. Check for Compatibility Issues:
    • IE8 is quite old and may have compatibility issues with modern websites. Consider using a more modern browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for better compatibility and security.
  6. Run Network Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has a built-in network troubleshooter that can help diagnose and fix common network connection issues. You can access it by:
      • Going to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Troubleshoot network problems.
  7. Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings:
    • Ensure that the firewall and antivirus software on the laptop are not blocking IE8 from accessing the internet.
  8. Reinstall IE8:
    • If none of the above steps work, you might consider reinstalling IE8 or upgrading to a newer browser. Since IE8 is quite outdated and may not be the best option for browsing the internet securely, I recommend considering an upgrade to a modern browser for better performance and security. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you encounter any issues or if you need further assistance!
