Published: April 26, 2005 | Updated: November 13, 2009

Microsoft products and services—including images, text, and software downloads (the "content")—are owned either by Microsoft Corporation or by third parties who have granted Microsoft permission to use the content. Microsoft cannot grant you permission for content that is owned by third parties. You may only copy, modify, distribute, display, license, or sell the content if you are granted explicit permission within the End-User License Agreement (EULA) or License Terms that accompany the content or are provided in the following guidelines. For more information, consult your copyright attorney.

Requirements for Allowed Uses

For permission to be granted for any uses allowed by these guidelines, you must comply with the following four requirements:

If your use includes references to a Microsoft product, you must use the full name of the product. When referencing any Microsoft trademarks, follow the General Microsoft Trademark Guidelines.

You must include the following statement: "Used with permission from Microsoft."

Your use may not be obscene or pornographic, and you may not be disparaging, defamatory, or libelous to Microsoft, any of its products, or any other person or entity.

You may link to Microsoft content by using either a plain text link with words such as "This way to Microsoft.com" or by participating in an applicable Link Logo program. No other images may be used as a link to a Microsoft site

The guidelines provided by Microsoft for the use of their copyrighted content are crucial to adhere to in order to maintain legal compliance and integrity when using their products and services. Here's a breakdown of the key points outlined in the guidelines: 1. Ownership of Content: - Microsoft products and services, including images, text, and software downloads, are owned by Microsoft Corporation or by third parties who have authorized Microsoft to use the content. 2. Permission for Use: - Permission to copy, modify, distribute, display, license, or sell the content is typically granted through the End-User License Agreement (EULA) or License Terms accompanying the content. 3. Requirements for Allowed Uses: - Four main requirements must be met for the use of Microsoft copyrighted content: - Use the full name of the product when referencing Microsoft products. - Include the statement: "Used with permission from Microsoft." - Ensure that the use is not obscene, pornographic, disparaging, defamatory, or libelous towards Microsoft, its products, or any other individual or entity. - Link to Microsoft content using a plain text link or participate in an applicable Link Logo program. Other images should not be used as links to Microsoft sites. 4. Trademark Guidelines: - When referencing Microsoft trademarks, it is essential to follow the General Microsoft Trademark Guidelines to maintain consistency and compliance. 5. Consultation: - If there are uncertainties regarding the use of Microsoft copyrighted content, it is recommended to seek guidance from a copyright attorney for further clarification. By understanding and following these guidelines, individuals and entities can ensure that their use of Microsoft copyrighted content is within legal boundaries and respects Microsoft's intellectual property rights.
