Is there any way to determine whether a seemingly factory-sealed copy of W7Ultimate I have obtained from a private re-seller is genuine and not previously registered?
Would be really nasty to go all the way and install it just to find out of any problem...
Thanks in advance!

If you already paid for it, you might as well just try it. You won't be running into trouble during installation because you can skip typing the product key during installation. You can always enter the product key after installation. The only problem is it won't get validated if you have an invalid key but you can use the OS for 30 days..

So I had copy of Win 7 that i needed correct genuine Keys for due 2 new system builds I was doing, I had the software just needed the keys, I tried the Microsoft store and was told they no longer sell keys for Win 7 Ultimate,
I was able to find a legit online seller:
Link Removed
I was able to get both key quickly and install was fast, they even gave a link to download ISO version if you need it
