Hello Josh, It sounds like you are experiencing issues with program responsiveness and permissions after your Windows Vista Home Basic system comes out of the screen saver. This could be related to several factors, including system settings, user permissions, or even possible malfunctions. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check User Permissions:
    • Ensure that your user account has administrative privileges. You can do this by checking your account settings in the Control Panel.
    • Try running the programs as an administrator by right-clicking on the program icon and selecting "Run as administrator."
    []Power Settings:
    • Verify your power settings to ensure that they are not causing issues when the system resumes from the screen saver.
    [
    ]Check for Malware:
    • Even though you mentioned that your virus definitions are up to date, it's still worth running a full system scan to rule out any malware causing these issues.
    []System File Check:
    • Run a system file check to verify the integrity of your Windows system files. This can help identify and fix any corrupted files that may be causing the problem.
    [
    ]Update Drivers:
    • Make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially graphics drivers, as display issues can sometimes lead to program unresponsiveness.
    []Event Viewer:
    • Check the Event Viewer for any error messages or warnings that might provide more details about what's causing the problem.
    [
    ]System Restore:
    • Consider performing a system restore to a point where the issue was not present.

      Additional Tips:

      • Keep your system and programs updated to the latest versions.
      • Consider upgrading your operating system if possible, as Windows Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft, making it vulnerable to security risks.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, feel free to provide more details or run through the troubleshooting steps. Let me know if you need further assistance!
