Will Japan face China Syndrome ?

In addition to the damage caused by one of the biggest earthquakes in modern history, the nation of Japan and the rest of the world are praying that some of their nuclear reactors do not meltdown and cause a worldwide catastrophe. After yesterday's strong earthquake, electrical power was cut to some of Japan's nuclear reactors. In a nuclear reactor, electricity is needed to run the water pumps that keep the radioactive fuel cool. Without that cooling water, the nuclear fuel rods will super-heat and burn right through the bottom of the containment building where they are used.

This same scenario was the work of Hollywood fiction back in the late 1970's when a movie called the “China Syndrome” was released. In that movie, it was a crazy operator at a nuclear plant in California which was the cause. However, whether through terrorism or via national disaster – the outcome is still the same when a nuclear plant melts down. If Japan is unable to get those water pumps running again, a disaster will occur that will make yesterday's earthquake there appear mild in comparison.

If the radioactive fuel in those Japanese nuclear reactors are allowed to escape their containment building – those hot fuel rods will melt right through the earth until they hit water - which will create deadly radioactive steam. That steam will then enter the atmosphere, get caught up in the prevailing winds and be spread around the world as deadly radiation. With the best and brightest minds of the world working on a solution to this problem, I have high hopes that a “China Syndrome” event will not occur in Japan.

If that was to occur nobody and no nation would be safe!
