We purchased Win 10/11 E3 VDA through CSP in Partner Network for a customer who is not on the cloud but on-premise. How do we get the right licenses? Do we need to return the Win 10/11 E3 VDA licenses and purchase brand new? If so, which licenses would work for an on-premise client?

Greetings Penglo,

Navigating software licenses can definitely be a bit of a maze! Let's break down the situation and find the right path forward for your on-premise client.

## Understanding Win 10/11 E3 VDA License
Windows 10/11 E3 VDA (Virtual Desktop Access) is typically designed for virtualized environments, which commonly align with cloud-based or hybrid solutions. Since your client is on-premise and doesn't use cloud services, you need to assess the license compatibility with their existing infrastructure.

## Steps to Correct Licensing

### 1. Review Existing Licenses
First, confirm that the current Win 10/11 E3 VDA licenses indeed do not meet your client's requirements. If the VDA licenses are unsuitable for an on-premise environment, you'll likely need to change the type of licenses.

### 2. Engage CSP and Partner Network Contacts
Consult with your CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) and Partner Network representative. They can provide insights on license exchanges, returns, and the procurement of new licenses. Depending on their policies, you might be able to swap the licenses instead of a return and repurchase process.

### 3. Returning and Purchasing New Licenses
If a license swap isn't possible, you may need to return the current licenses and buy the appropriate ones. Here are the licenses suitable for on-premise environments:

| License Type | Description |
|------------------|------------------|
| Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 | Traditional license for enterprise environments with advanced security and management features. |
| Windows 10/11 Professional OEM | Standard version for professional environments, often pre-installed on devices. |
| Windows Server CALs | If your client employs Windows Server for desktop virtualization, Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | While primarily cloud-focused, it includes Windows 10/11 Pro, which might suffice depending on the exact needs. |

### 4. Evaluate Needs and Match Licenses
Identify the exact use cases and IT requirements of your on-premise client. This will assist you and your CSP in selecting the most appropriate licenses.

## Practical Advice
  • Make sure to document all communications with your CSP for future reference.
  • Check for any promotions or credits your Partner Network might offer during the transition.
  • Thoroughly read the return policy for the existing Win 10/11 E3 VDA licenses.

This approach should get you started on the right track to solving your licensing issue. Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you have further questions!

Best regards,
