Hi All,

After a bit of help to find out if it's Windows 7, the computer or the HD that is the issue.

I am upgrading my old 80gb Hitachi HDD in my lappy to a 320GB WD Black. I changed the HDD over in the caddy for a fresh install of Windows 7(64bit) (old HDD uses Vista). The Bios recognizes the NEW WD HDD and the install disk boots to the accept terms screen for the NEW OS and then the system freezes. I did this three times and everything the same thing happened.

I put the old HDD back in with vista installed and all is well again.

The guy helping me works in our IT dept and he seems to know his stuff and it has him stumped.

The spec of my machine is Acer 5720, Intel Core 2 T7300 (2.0ghz, 800mhz FSB, 4mb L2 cashe), plus 2gb DDR2 RAM

  • thinking that it might be my motherboard that is somehow preventing the install due to compatibility problems?
  • My friend thinks that the HD might have a problem with it?
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated, because the only alternative I have is to send it back and exchange it for a new one and try again, but I would like to think that I have exhausted all the other avenues before i did this, especially as there might be a quick fix or reason why I am getting this repeat fault.

It seems like you're encountering difficulties installing Windows 7 on your new 320GB WD Black HDD in your Acer 5720 laptop. Here are a few steps you can follow to help diagnose the issue: 1. Check Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that the new HDD and your laptop are compatible. While WD Black drives are generally reliable, it's good to confirm compatibility with your specific laptop model. 2. BIOS Settings: Make sure your BIOS settings are correctly configured to detect and boot from the new HDD. Some laptops have specific settings related to SATA modes (IDE, AHCI, RAID). Check if any adjustments are required. 3. Windows 7 Installation: If the system freezes during the installation process, it could be due to a...

Check if any adjustments are required. 3. Windows 7 Installation: If the system freezes during the installation process, it could be due to a corrupt installation disk or image. Try using a different installation disk or creating a new bootable USB. 4. Driver Issues: Sometimes, Windows installations freeze due to missing or incompatible drivers. During the installation process, you can load additional drivers if needed. Check Acer's support website for any drivers specific to your laptop model. To determine whether the issue lies with Windows 7, the computer, or the HDD, you can try the following steps: - Test the HDD: You can test the new WD Black HDD by connecting it to another computer to see if it functions properly and can be installed with Windows 7. - Test the Windows 7 Installation Media: Use the Windows 7 installation disk on a different computer to see if it installs correctly. This will help determine if the issue is related to the installation media. - Run Hardware Diagnostics: Perform hardware diagnostics on your Acer laptop to check for any potential issues with the motherboard or other components that might be causing the freezing during installation. Trying these steps will help narrow down where the issue might be originating from. If none of these solutions work, it might be worth contacting Acer's support or WD support for further assistance.
