Windows 11 has introduced a built-in image compression feature within its Share UI, allowing users to easily reduce image file sizes without altering their resolution. This functionality offers quality settings—Low, Medium, High, and Original—enabling users to select the desired compression level. For instance, a 1MB image at 3840×2160 resolution can be compressed to approximately 147KB while maintaining its original dimensions. Currently, this feature is available to Windows 11 Insiders and is expected to roll out to all users in the coming months.
In addition to image compression, Windows 11 has expanded its file compression capabilities by supporting formats like 7Z and TAR. Users can now create archives in these formats directly through File Explorer, selecting compression methods and levels to suit their needs. This enhancement eliminates the need for third-party applications for handling these file types.
Furthermore, Windows 11 version 24H2 has introduced native support for the JPEG XL image format via a Microsoft Store extension. JPEG XL offers superior compression ratios and high-quality output, supporting both lossless and lossy compression. This integration allows users to manage JPEG XL files seamlessly within the operating system.
These developments reflect Microsoft's commitment to enhancing multimedia handling in Windows 11, providing users with efficient tools for image and file compression directly within the operating system.
