It seems like you're experiencing driver issues with your Atheros AR9281 wireless card when using it on Windows Vista compared to Windows 7. The different driver versions and providers could be contributing to the problem. Here's how you can potentially address this:

Getting the Windows 7 Driver for Vista:

  1. Compatibility and Driver Architecture: Yes, the driver architecture difference might be causing the issue. Windows Vista 64-bit requires drivers that are explicitly designed for a 64-bit operating system.
  2. Driver Search: To try and use the Windows 7 driver on your Windows Vista 64-bit system, you can follow these steps:

  2. Driver Search: To try and use the Windows 7 driver on your Windows Vista 64-bit system, you can follow these steps:
    • Manufacturer's Website: Visit the Atheros website and search for the AR9281 drivers specifically for Windows 7 32-bit.
    • Compatibility Mode: Sometimes, you can use compatibility mode in Windows to run drivers from older versions. Right-click on the driver installer, go to Properties, and set the compatibility mode to Windows 7.
  3. Manual Driver Installation:
    • If you have the driver file for Windows 7, you can try a manual installation on Windows Vista by following these steps:
      • Open Device Manager (Press Windows Key + X and select Device Manager).
      • Locate your Atheros AR9281 wireless card.
      • Right-click on it, select Update Driver Software.
      • Choose "Browse my computer for driver software" and then navigate to the folder containing the Windows 7 driver files.

        Considerations:

        • Digital Signature: Unsigned drivers can sometimes cause issues, but you can try disabling driver signature enforcement temporarily on Windows Vista to test if the driver works.
        • Driver Compatibility: Ensure the driver you are trying to install is compatible with both the Atheros AR9281 chipset and Windows Vista 64-bit.
By following these steps, you may be able to use the Windows 7 driver on your Windows Vista system. Remember to create a restore point before making any changes and proceed with caution when installing drivers manually.
