I am new to Windows Live Mail and I have questions. This morning it said it was blocked because junk E Mail was being sent out. I had to change the password (for Live Mail) I guess. I know the mail was not sent from my computer. How can I keep the Live Mail Account safe? Also the Live Mail page opens the mail on the right side of the page before you actually open the E Mail. Back in the old OE days that was bad because some viruses could activate. Should I change that setup? When I close Live Mail does that close that account?

Solution
It's important to ensure the security of your Windows Live Mail account to prevent any unauthorized use or potential security threats. Here are some steps and considerations to keep your Live Mail account safe:

Steps to Keep Your Live Mail Account Secure:

  1. Change Password Regularly: Periodically changing your password is a good practice to prevent unauthorized access.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password.
  3. Beware of Phishing Emails: Be cautious of emails asking for personal information and avoid clicking on suspicious links.

  4. Update Security Software: Ensure your antivirus and antimalware software is up-to-date to protect your system from threats.
  5. Check Account Settings: Review your account settings and ensure that only authorized devices have access to your account.
  6. Review Sent Items: Regularly check your sent items for any emails you didn't send. This could indicate unauthorized access.

    Addressing the Mail Preview Issue:

The feature that displays a preview of the email on the right side can be convenient but also carries some security risks. If you are concerned about potential threats being activated by previewing emails, you can disable this feature.

To Change the Mail Preview Settings:

  7. Open Windows Live Mail: Go to the "View" tab on the top menu bar.
  8. Select Layout: Look for an option related to "Reading Pane" or "Preview Pane" in the menu.
  9. Disable Preview: You can choose to disable the preview pane or set it to display at the bottom of the window instead of the right side.

Closing Live Mail and Your Account:

Closing Windows Live Mail simply shuts down the application on your computer. It does not close your email account. Your email account remains active, and you can access it through other devices or applications.

    Additional Tips:

    • Regularly Update Software: Keep your operating system and applications up-to-date.
  • Backup Important Emails: Regularly back up emails or important data to prevent data loss. By following these guidelines and staying vigilant, you can enhance the security of your Windows Live Mail account and ensure a safer email experience.
