I currently have Direct TV with Tivo. I understand that Windows Media Center does not work with Direct TV.

What I really would like to do is give cable / satellite altogether and just record over the air using WMC. Believe it or not, I don't yet have and kind of HD receiver so I have no idea what kind of reception I will get.

I would like to start small and just buy a 2 tuner card. But I would like to have a backup plan and move to cable (Vios) should my reception be poor.

I see there are "cablecard" tuners. I understand I will need one to record from cable. Do any of the cablecards also record over the air broadcasts?

To address your inquiry about using Windows Media Center for recording over-the-air broadcasts and possibly switching to cable in the future, here are some insights: 1. Recording Over-the-Air (OTA) Broadcasts with Windows Media Center: - Windows Media Center is capable of recording over-the-air broadcasts using a compatible TV tuner card. You would need a TV tuner that specifically supports OTA broadcasts to capture these signals effectively. 2. Selecting a 2-Tuner Card for OTA Recording: - When choosing a TV tuner card for recording OTA broadcasts, you should look for a dual-tuner card that allows you to watch one channel while recording another simultaneously. This setup is common for users who want to watch and record...

Selecting a 2-Tuner Card for OTA Recording: - When choosing a TV tuner card for recording OTA broadcasts, you should look for a dual-tuner card that allows you to watch one channel while recording another simultaneously. This setup is common for users who want to watch and record different programs at the same time. 3. Transitioning to Cable (e.g., Verizon Fios) with CableCARDs: - If you decide to switch to cable in the future, especially services like Verizon Fios, you can use a CableCARD tuner with Windows Media Center. CableCARDs are specialized devices that decrypt and descramble the encrypted digital cable signals to enable viewing and recording of cable TV channels on a supported device like Windows Media Center. 4. Compatibility of CableCARDs for OTA Broadcasting: - CableCARDs are designed primarily for cable TV decryption and may not inherently support OTA broadcast reception directly. However, some CableCARD tuners might have additional functionality to receive and record over-the-air broadcasts, but this feature varies depending on the specific tuner model. To summarize, while CableCARDs are essential for decrypting cable signals for viewing and recording, their compatibility with recording over-the-air broadcasts may vary. It's advisable to research specific CableCARD tuner models to determine if they offer OTA recording capabilities in addition to cable signal decryption. If you have any specific tuner models in mind or need further assistance in selecting the right tuner for your setup, feel free to provide more details for personalized recommendations.
