Choose a restore point to go back to or perform a "clean" install. Be aware, you'll need to re-install all your 3rd party application. You also have yo cop your Documents, pictures, music, video's, contacts, etc to a flash drive. Open msconfig -services tab and see if the Windows update is there, and marked as running.
