Windows 10 External laptop display off center

I connected an external monitor to my laptop via VGA cable and the display is off center. They're of different resolutions but the current settings already reflect that. The monitor display is going off the left side of the monitor and the right side is empty black. What do I need to do to correct it?

Make sure each screen (external and laptop) are on supported ratios 4:3 or 16:9 and are on resolutions they support. If the external is still off click o the auto adjust button on the monitor to fix it.

It's centered when it's set to 1600*1200 but it's vertically compressed. The external is a 1680*1050 monitor, when it's set there it's off center.
