I have installed a new computer and copied files from my old one. Properties on the folder I copied to shows 639MB and 4,197 files but going through the sub directories I cannot find any files at all.
I have checked “show hidden files”.

Solution
"Show hidden" only shows those with the hidden bit set, you'll need to go into View options and allow "system" files to be shown although user data isn't generally set with the system flag.
