They are still there. You may have to pin them to the start. Select all apps and right click each of the item , and, then, from the bottom bar, "Pin to Start"

Are the Accessories gone in Windows 8? I tried to find the calculator and recorder, but have they been discontinued? If so, any suggestions on replacements? Thank you.

Yes, I use calculator all the time, it opens from a key on my Microsoft keyboard, so I never really thought about where you access it onscreen.
I do remember that I had a hard time finding Note Pad, and have an icon for it on my task-bar now.
if you use any of these regularly it's much easier to tell it to place a link on the task-bar.
