Start the machine in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as the machine is starting.
In Safe Mode open Notepad or Wordpad first from Accessories and create a new document and attempt to save it and see if it crashes (not sure exactly what you mean by crashes, an explanation would be helpful). Pay attention to where the document is being saved. If that is successful, then move to one of your office suites and see what happens there.
