Fallout Shelter is now available free on Xbox One and Windows 10, bringing Bethesda’s Vault-management game into the Xbox Play Anywhere program with shared progress across console and PC.
As announced by Bethesda and Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog, players can use the same Xbox account to continue a Vault on either platform rather than maintaining separate saves. The Xbox One release also adds controller-focused support for building rooms, assigning Dwellers, and managing expeditions from the living room.
The February 7, 2017 launch matters most for players who divide their time between a console and a Windows 10 PC. Xbox Play Anywhere means a single digital entitlement covers both versions, while cloud-synchronized saves and achievements move with the account.
That distinguishes the Microsoft Store and Xbox One editions from Fallout Shelter’s earlier mobile and Bethesda.net PC releases. Existing saves from those separate platforms were not automatically folded into the Play Anywhere version, so returning Overseers should expect to begin a new Vault unless they were already playing within the Xbox ecosystem.
The console and Windows 10 edition arrives with the game’s major systems already in place, including Quests, pets, crafting and scrapping, new room types, and expanded Dweller customization. The premise remains simple: build an underground Vault, keep its residents supplied with power, food, and water, and send them into the Wasteland for loot.
For Windows users, this is also an early example of the practical value Microsoft was pitching for Xbox Play Anywhere: one purchase—or, here, one free download—and one continuing save across a PC and Xbox One.
