Students heading into the 2026–27 academic year can legitimately avoid paying for four major software categories—Office, UI design, developer tools, and CAD/3D production—but the useful part of the deal is in the license terms, not the headline price. How-To Geek’s August 10 roundup correctly identifies free education access from Microsoft, Figma, JetBrains, and Autodesk. The catch is that each offer is tied to an institution-controlled identity, annual verification, or an explicit ban on commercial work.

For Windows users, this can mean access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, AutoCAD, Revit, Maya, and other professional tools without buying a personal subscription. It does not mean every student receives installed desktop apps, unrestricted cloud storage, permanent file access, or a license that can be carried into freelance work after graduation.

The practical advice is simple: claim the entitlement before buying anything, but keep local copies of important work and understand exactly which account owns it. A school email is both the key to these offers and the dependency that can take them away.

Microsoft’s Office 365 A1 for Education remains the most broadly useful of the four programs because Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are still embedded in course requirements, group assignments, and institutional templates. Microsoft says students and educators with an eligible education email address can receive Office 365 A1 at no cost; its own storefront lists Office Home 2024 at $179.99 for a one-time, one-device desktop license.

How-To Geek rightly notes the major limitation: Office 365 A1 is primarily a web-app entitlement. Microsoft’s education page specifically promotes free access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through Microsoft 365 for the web. A school that licenses Microsoft 365 A3, A5, or separate desktop-app rights may provide installable Windows and macOS applications, but that is a decision made by the institution—not an automatic benefit of a student email address.

That distinction should affect how students plan their setup. Word and PowerPoint on the web cover routine papers and slides well, while Excel on the web can become restrictive for classes that rely on advanced desktop features, large workbooks, specialty add-ins, or complex data connections. Students in accounting, statistics, engineering, and business programs should confirm their course requirements before assuming the browser version is a replacement for the installed Windows app.

There is also an offboarding problem that schools rarely highlight at enrollment. Microsoft says that when education eligibility expires, Office apps can shift into reduced-functionality mode, meaning files can be viewed but not newly created or edited. Services connected to the school account, including OneDrive and Microsoft 365 for the web, stop working as well.

Students should therefore avoid making a school OneDrive their only archive. Download a local copy of each important paper, spreadsheet, and presentation before graduation, transfer, withdrawal, or the loss of a school mailbox. On a Windows PC, that means checking that OneDrive files are actually available locally rather than marked as cloud-only placeholders.

Figma for Education has a stronger plan—and a stricter expiry path​

Figma’s education program is more generous on paper than its ordinary free Starter tier. Figma says higher-education students and educators receive its Professional plan, while high-school students and educators receive the Enterprise plan. A Professional full seat is currently listed at $16 per month on Figma’s public pricing page when billed annually, so the value is real for students using Figma Design, FigJam, prototype sharing, design systems, or developer handoff in structured coursework.

The qualification rules are narrower than “anyone learning design.” Figma requires applicants to be current students or educators in a qualifying classroom and to apply using a school email address. Higher-education applicants go through SheerID verification; high-school applicants must use a recognized school domain. Self-directed learners, startup staff, many non-teaching school employees, and programs whose main purpose is not education do not qualify.

Figma’s rules also split the product experience between higher education and K–12. High-school users get an Enterprise plan, but Figma says they do not receive its AI tools, Figma Make, or Figma Sites. Higher-education and bootcamp education users can receive those features, subject to the company’s availability limits and monthly AI-credit allocation. For a student deciding whether the “Enterprise” label is inherently better, the answer is no: the available feature set depends on education category, not only the plan name.

The bigger issue is what happens to collaborative work after eligibility ends. Figma’s documentation says an education team will automatically downgrade to Starter when its owner is no longer eligible. Teams with more than three files can become locked until the owner re-verifies, pays for Professional, or moves or deletes files to reach the Starter plan’s limit. Team members can lose editing rights even if they personally remain verified when the team owner does not renew.

That makes account ownership important for class projects. Before a semester ends, students should establish who owns the team, who can move files, and where a final export will live. A locked Figma team is not data loss—the files can generally be downloaded or moved—but it can become an avoidable deadline problem when a group needs to revise a portfolio piece, capstone prototype, or design handoff.

JetBrains gives students professional IDEs, not commercial licenses​

JetBrains offers perhaps the cleanest free-tool proposition for computer science and software-development students. Its Student Pack includes full versions of major IDEs including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, WebStorm, and other tools from the company’s portfolio. The commercial All Products Pack is listed at $299 annually for individuals, while JetBrains advertises a $179.40 graduate price for former student license holders.

The eligibility requirements deserve closer reading than the broad “students get it free” message. JetBrains says an applicant must be a full-time student in a program lasting at least one year, and verification can use a university email address, an ISIC or ITIC card, or the GitHub Student Developer Pack. The license is renewed annually through the user’s JetBrains Account.

That means a valid school email alone may not settle every case. A student in a short bootcamp, continuing-education course, part-time program, or institution with an unrecognized email domain can run into verification issues. JetBrains says users whose domain is not accepted can ask for it to be added to the verification repository, but that is not the instant approval students may expect during the first week of classes.

The most important restriction is commercial use. JetBrains explicitly says student licenses are for non-commercial educational purposes, including academic research. A student can install the tools on multiple personal devices, but should not use the free license for paid client work, a job, or freelance software development. An internship can be a gray-looking case from the student’s perspective, but JetBrains’s position is not: the employer should provide a commercial license if the work is part of employment.

For Windows developers, the free access is still significant. Rider is particularly valuable for .NET work, while IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional are meaningfully different from community editions. The license lets students learn on the same tools they may encounter in a professional Windows development environment; it does not let them turn their student status into free tooling for a side business.

Autodesk’s savings are huge, but the education license is tightly bounded​

Autodesk’s Education plan carries the highest headline dollar value because individual commercial subscriptions for its professional products remain expensive. Autodesk lists AutoCAD at $2,095 per year, Maya at $2,010 per year, and Revit at $3,005 per year in the United States. Eligible students can obtain one-year, named-user access to a broad range of Autodesk products and renew that access each year while they remain eligible.

Unlike a limited student edition, Autodesk says the education software has the same features and functionality as the paid subscription. It also allows access to the current release and, where available, up to three earlier versions. For Windows users working through a course that specifies a particular release of AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion, 3ds Max, or Maya, that backward-version availability can matter more than a generic “free software” label.

But Autodesk is unusually clear about the use restriction: the software may be used only for learning and research and may not be used for commercial, professional, or other for-profit purposes. A student cannot use the education copy of AutoCAD to create paid plans for a local contractor, use Revit to bill for architectural services, or use Maya to fulfill paid animation work. The fact that the software is feature-complete does not make the output commercially licensable under the education terms.

Autodesk also uses SheerID to verify enrollment at a qualified educational institution. Its eligibility rules extend to accredited middle schools, high schools, and higher-education institutions, with additional paths for qualifying homeschool students and some country-specific apprenticeships. Training-center and retraining-program participants are among the groups Autodesk says do not qualify, which is another reason not to treat “student” as a universal credential.

Students should pay attention to cloud-dependent projects. Autodesk says education users who regularly consume cloud services beyond typical levels can face additional restrictions, and those cloud-service terms can change. Keep source files, exports, textures, project folders, and deliverables in a local backup location—not only in an Autodesk account or classroom cloud workspace.


The four offers are worth claiming, but they are education licenses, not permanent personal ownership. Microsoft’s option is the best immediate answer for routine coursework, Figma makes group design work affordable if a team manages its ownership carefully, JetBrains removes a meaningful barrier to learning professional development tools, and Autodesk can save design and engineering students thousands of dollars.

The deadline that matters is not a vendor’s back-to-school promotion. It is the date a school disables an email address or a student loses eligibility. Students who verify early, use separate personal backup storage, and export active projects before that date can take full advantage of the free access without finding their coursework trapped behind an expired academic account.
